Roofmeadow® vegetated roof covers are engineered systems which consist of three primary layers which overlie the waterproofing membrane of the roof deck.
Each layer typically incorporates subsystems which are included to provide specific performance features, such as water retention, insulation, or dimensional stability.
The science and art of designing Roofmeadow® vegetated roof covers is selecting three layers that complement each other and work together synergetically.
Through the judicious selection of growth media and plantings, vegetated roof covers need not require irrigation, mowing, or fertilizing. Roofscapes, Inc. utilizes only natural materials in growth media formulations for its Roofmeadow® systems. These naturalized systems provide robust and durable vegetated covers for roofs.
The Roofmeadow® family of green roof systems are based on six basic profiles. The examples shown in the summary below are only representative of each type. In practice, the depth and type of media used in each system are variable. Factors such as:
will influence the choice of media. Media formulations are specified based on their desired physical and chemical properties, and vary from region to region, in order to take advantage of the materials that are locally available. The six basic systems are as follows:
Single-layer System: A general-purpose growth/drainage layer is installed over a moisture management fabric. Special attention to design ensures that water does not accumulate. Irrigation is not recommended in temperate climates; however, base capillary irrigation is used infrequently. Typical Depth: 2-3 inches Max. Saturation Weight: 13-17 lbs/square foot Typical Plant Families: Sedums Recommended for:

Two-layer System: Aromatic Garden systems use a lightweight growth medium over the Roofscapes, Inc. Roofmeadow® Synthetic Sheet Drain. These systems promote free drainage of the growth media over large areas. Irrigation is not recommended in temperate climates; however surface drip or spray irrigation can be used if required. Typical Depth: 3-4 inches Max. Saturation Weight: 17-23 lbs/square foot Typical Plant Families: Sedums

Two-layer System: Savannah two-layer systems employ a lightweight growth medium over a granular drainage layer, with a root-permeable separation fabric maintaining the layer integrity. Replicating natural systems, Savannah roofs promote strong plant growth by draining a dsitributing water efficiently and concentrating root mass in a stable temperature and moisture zone. To reduce heat stress in semi-arid climates, Roofscapes, Inc. introduces a permeable thermal shield above the drainage media. Highly efficient base capillary irrigation may also be used. Available in modular form. Typical Depth: 4-6 inches Max. Saturation Weight: 23-35 lbs/square foot Typical Plant Families: Sedums & Herbs

The Meadow Family of Roofmeadow® Systems Three-Layer System: In the three-layer Meadow 1 systems, the Savannah-type growth medium and drainage layers are supported by additional granular media, forming a water storage layer. The captured rain or irrigation water performs as a perched water table does in nature. A moisture management fabric underlies the system. This system provides passive irrigation and optimal conditions for efficient active base trickle irrigation. Typical Depth: 6-9 inches Max. Saturation Weight: 35-50 lbs/square foot Typical Plant Families: Meadow Grasses

Three-Layer System: The seldom-used Meadow 2 system reverses the order of the Meadow 1 water storage and drainage layers by introducing a Roofmeadow® plastic retention/drainage sheet at the bottom of the profile. This sheet captures and retains water in small cup-like depressions in its upper surface. Water moves freely through the drainage pathways on the underside. If irrigating, a surface drip or spray system is required for this configuration. Typical Depth: 6-9 inches Max. Saturation Weight: 35-45 lbs/square foot Recommended for:

Three-layer System: 'Intensive' Woodlands systems provide 12 inches or more of growth medium, sustaining complex landscapes with a full range of flora, from grass to small trees. Supported by a three-layer system similar to the Meadow 1 green roofs, Woodlands roofs can provide the greatest ecological integration, aesthetic enrichment, and increased property values. Typically installed with active base trickle irrigation. Typical Depth: 12+ inches or more Max. Saturation Weight: 70+ lbs/square foot Typical Plant Families: Meadow Perennials
