What is a Vanadium Redox Battery?

The Vanadium Redox Battery (VRB) is an electrochemical energy storage device, whereby energy (electricity) can be stored indefinitely in a liquid and can be recovered instantaneously. The word “battery” may tend to create the wrong impression in terms of size. Do not think of the VRB as a battery to power your watch, cell phone or torch. It is not intended to replace the 12 volt lead acid battery supporting the electrical system in your car. The VRB will be used for emergency standby power in the telecommunications industry, as the backup unit in Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, a load levelling device in a power station, the energy storage device in a solar or wind generated remote power system or to power your electric car. A recent press report provided the following definition: “In simple terms, it’s a very big battery…with the capacity to store and deliver power on a commercial scale for electricity networks. It’s environmentally friendly...rechargeable and produces no emissions.”
