1) Pre Disaster Mitigation Program
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requests applications for the Pre-Disaster Mitigation Project Grant Program (PDM). PDM provides funding for implementation of cost effective projects, such as buyouts of flood-prone buildings, construction of safe rooms, elevations of homes located in the floodplain or making structures more earthquake resistant, prior to disaster events. $150 million expected to be available, 225 awards anticipated. Only state or territorial emergency management agencies are eligible to apply as primary applicants, however, sub applicants are eligible to apply through these agencies. 2) Inventions and Innovations
The U.S. Department of Energy requests applications for the Inventions & Innovations Program (I&I). I&I supports energy-saving technologies in the conceptual and developmental stages of development. DOE is particularly interested in innovative technologies that fit within the following program areas: Biomass, Building Technologies, Distributed Energy & Electric Reliability, FreedomCAR & Vehicle Technologies, Geothermal, Hydrogen, Fuel Cells, & Infrastructure Technologies, Industrial Technologies, Solar Energy, and Wind & Hydropower Technologies. $2 million expected to be available, 10 awards anticipated. 3) DOE SBIR/STTR
The U.S. Department of Energy announces its intent to request applications for the FY06 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs. The objective of these programs include increasing private sector commercialization of technology developed through DOE supported R&D, stimulating technological innovation in the private sector, and improving the return on investment from federally funded research for economic and social benefits to the Nation. 4) NSF SBIR/STTR
The National Science Foundation requests applications for the FY06 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs. The primary objective of the NSF SBIR/STTR Program is to increase the incentive and opportunity for small firms to undertake cutting edge, high risk, high quality scientific, engineering, or science/engineering education research that would have a high potential economic payoff if the research is successful. 5) Rural Community Development
The U.S. Department of Agriculture requests applications for the Rural Community Development Initiative (RCDI). RCDI provides grants to qualified intermediary organizations to provide financial and technical assistance to recipients to develop their capacity and ability to undertake projects related to housing, community facilities, or community and economic development. $6 million expected to be available, 12 awards anticipated. 6) Solid State Lighting
The U.S. Department of Energy requests applications for applied research in the Solid State Lighting Core Technologies Program.
Areas of interest include: LED High-efficiency semiconductor materials; LED Device approaches, structures and systems; OLED Materials Issues; OLED Packaging, encapsulation and fabrication.

7) Environmental Information Exchange

8) Undergraduate Environmental Fellowships The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requests applications for the Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Program, which provides undergraduate fellowships for bachelor level students in environmentally related fields of study. The fellowship provides up to $17K per year of academic support and up to $7.5K of internship support for a 3 month summer period. $622.5K expected to be available, 15 awards anticipated. The National Science Foundation requests applications for the Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREM). 13) Water Management in Jordan
The U.S. Agency for International Development requests proposals for Community Based Initiatives for Water Demand Management in Jordan.
Jordan is considered to be one of the 10 poorest countries worldwide in water resources. This work would include engaging grassroots action by providing grants to 30 poor communities a year, mostly in a revolving credit format to initiate water conserving projects in their communities that enhance living standards. Areas of support are for small scale rain water harvesting, cisterns rehabilitation/construction, water system improvements in buildings and homes, piping/lining of irrigation canals, introducing water efficient technologies, and other innovative programs that promote water use efficiency. $2.5 million expected to be available, 1 award anticipated. 14) Energy Efficiency in Kenya
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency and the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) invite proposals to develop a feasibility study for the Kenya Tea Development Agency Integrated Energy Management Project.
KTDA, a private Kenyan organization, is the largest smallholder tea organization in the world. KTDA reports that energy costs represent between 25 to 40% of the cost of production in the tea production cycle, and is actively seeking ways to limit this cost to ensure the continued productivity of its clients. Areas of interest include developing mini hydroelectric power stations at various factories, increasing the factories energy efficiency, and securing the supply of biomass fuel for boilers.
