Hydrogen isn't 'free lunch'

Reader Robert Dewey raises the question why we are not more actively pursuing hydrogen-powered cars. Part of the answer, I believe, is that free hydrogen is not available for collection, as are the so-called fossil fuels. It must be manufactured using a process that consumes more energy than is available in the resulting hydrogen.
In other words, hydrogen is not an original energy source, only a method for storing and transporting energy. Some other energy source is required to produce the hydrogen. When all things are taken into consideration, it may be the right thing to do. However, it is not the free lunch envisioned by some.
