Legislation would resolve long-running Navajo-Arch Coal dispute

Washington DC (Platts)--6Apr2005

Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chairman Pete Domenici, R-N.M.,
reintroduced legislation on Monday designed to resolve a long-running dispute
between the Navajo Nation and Arch Coal. The bill (S. 692) would settle a
conflict created by a 1976 law that resulted in land on which Arch held coal
leases being transferred to the tribe without compensation to Arch. If passed,
the measure would give Arch bidding rights on coal leaseholds in other areas
equivalent to the fair market value of the Navajo land, located in the Bisti
area of northwestern New Mexico.
