Renewables must compete, German suppliers to tell EU's Piebalgs

London (Platts)--25Apr2005

Green energy sources must compete with other fuels if the EU is to guarantee
functioning power market competition across the bloc by the summer of 2007,
the association of German power suppliers (VDEW) said Monday, citing a speech
its president plans to deliver to the EU energy commissioner in Brussels
Tuesday.

"Fairer competition in Europe is a pre-requisite for a functioning internal
European energy market and that applies to the support of renewable energy
sources as well," VDEW president Werner Brinker plans to tell commissioner
Andris Piebalgs. Brinker will urge the commissioner towards the harmonization
of support systems for renewable energy in Europe. A uniform European market
for renewables would bring huge gains in efficiency, he said, adding it was
doubtful whether national support schemes--such as Germany's renewable energy
law--would be compatible with the principle of free movement of trade on full
power market opening on July 1, 2007.
