Australian govt may cut funding to solar energy sector

Opposition environment spokesman Anthony Albanese said the federal government is considering cutting a support program for the solar energy industry. He said funding for the photovoltaic rebate program (PVRP) was due to run out in June.

* Labor and green groups were critical of a lack of funding for solar and other renewable energies in the 2004 Budget.

* Albanese said the program cost A$8 million (US$6.15 million) per annum and delivered an important stimulus for the clean energy industry.
