Nuclear call criticised

power stationGreen NGO Friends of the Earth Scotland has called on the union Amicus to back the widespread use of renewable energy, following a representative’s claim that the country could face a growing number of power cuts without the use of solutions such as nuclear energy.

Amicus regional secretary John Quigley, speaking on BBC.co.uk, warned that Scotland is facing a ‘return to the dark ages’ because of failures in the power industry, and that nuclear must be considered as a viable option for future energy creation.

“Instead of backing a brighter, safer future for its members and the rest of us, Amicus appears to want to keep its members working in hazardous and polluting power plants. The only thing 'dark age' today is the Amicus support for unsafe, uneconomic and unpopular nuclear power,” said FoE Scotland’s Chief Executive Duncan McLaren.

“We need trade unions and politicians to back sensible action to deliver year-on-year cuts in climate-changing emissions. With the election only few weeks away, parties would be better of listening to the two-thirds of voters who would rather see cuts in climate pollution made using more renewables rather than nuclear power," he added.
