China to boost development of natural gas, nuclear power

China will speed up implementation of its plural energy supply strategy in which natural gas and nuclear power will be the focus of development, according to Zhou Dadi, director of the Energy Research Institute under the State Development and Reform Commission. He said that China will have to implement a plural energy supply strategy so as to reduce the excessive dependence on coal which has damaged the environment.

 

* China consumed about 2 billion tons of coal in 2004.

* This accounted for 67 per cent of the country's total energy consumption.
