Direct Energy to offer green power below price to beat in Texas

Washington (Platts)--23Aug2005
Direct Energy on Tuesday said it is to offer two renewable energy sourced
power supply plans in Houston and Dallas, one of which is priced below the
price to beat from utility affiliated providers in each city.
Direct Energy's Clean Texas Wind plan is a 50% renewable product using
wind power, and it is priced at 11.85 cts/kWh in Dallas and 12.54 cts/kWh in
Houston, which is a 2% discount from the price to beat of TXU Energy and
CenterPoint Energy, respectively. Those prices are based on the average
monthly use of residential customer an include a monthly charge of about
$5.50, said Direct, the North American retail marketing unit of UK-based
Centrica.
Power prices in Texas have been climbing because of rising gas prices,
and the price to beat of the utility affiliates is expected to increase before
the end of the year, retail suppliers have said.
Direct Energy's Pure Texas Wind plan is a 100% renewable product, offered
at a one-year fixed price of 12.64 cts/kWh in Dallas and 13.68 cts/kWh in
Houston, based on average residential use and a $5 monthly charge.
