Power Demand Peaks in Tokyo Wed. Under Hot Spell

Electricity demand at Tokyo Electric Power Co. soared to a record high for this summer Wednesday afternoon as a heat wave lingered across the Japanese archipelago.

Power demand at Tokyo Electric, which supplies electricity to Japan's capital and surrounding areas, rose to 57.32 million kilowatts at 3 p.m.

Temperatures rose to as high as 32.4 degrees centigrade in central Tokyo on the day, marking the eighth consecutive scorching day that had mercury above 30 degrees.

Expecting growth in power demand for air conditioning, Tokyo Electric was prepared to supply as much as 59.4 million kilowatts Wednesday, company officials said.

Power demand also soared in northern Japan regions, with Tohoku Electric Power Co. seeing demand growing to 14.3 million kilowatts and Hokuriku Electric Power Co. , 5.45 million kilowatts, both record highs for this season. END
