EU to push for global co-operation

European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas will make the establishment of a post-Kyoto global strategy on climate change a priority during his appearance at the UN conference in Montreal next week.

"Time is running out,” said Commissioner Dimas. "Montreal gives us the opportunity to start a debate on future climate policies, which must involve all major emitters in order to be effective. The European Union will continue to make a strong case for global action against climate change. I call on all our partners to join us in these efforts.”

The EU is also continuing its long-held support of the Kyoto Protocol, with decisions on strengthening the regulations and streamlining key mechanisms also on the agenda. As one of the staunchest promoters of Kyoto, the treaty’s perceived failings will come as
