EU, G77 countries agree on talks to extend Kyoto Protocol

Montreal (Platts)--9Dec2005
The European Union and the countries of the G77, representing 132
developing countries, reached agreement Thursday for "a process of
negotiations over future commitments of industrialized nations" under the
Kyoto Protocol, according to French ecology and sustainable development
minister Nelly Olin.
Speaking at a press conference at the UN Climate Change conference late
Thursday, Olin said the agreement will be forwarded Friday to the plenary
session of the Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol for adoption.
"We must still progress on global negotiations for a post-2012
framework under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,"
Olin said, referring to efforts being led by Canada to engage the US in
climate change talks.
The Montreal climate change conference enters its final day Friday, but
UK environment secretary Margaret Beckett said there were still a number of
stumbling blocks to be cleared before a final agreement. Speaking on BBC radio
Friday, Beckett said there had been a sense of "false euphoria" when parties
reached an agreement in principal to extend Kyoto. But by early Friday there
was a sense of what she hoped was "false despair" as countries worked to agree
on the finer detail, having to reconcile their individual positions.
