“Iran would take another step closer to be
energy crossroad of the region should an electricity network connection
agreement with the Republic of Georgia, via Armenia, be reached,” executive
director of Iran’s Electricity Network Management Company Mohammad Ali Vahdati
stated.
“Currently, Iran’s electricity network is integrated with all the neighbouring
countries except Russia; it would be so in the next two years,” Vahdati
elaborated further.
He also stipulated that there were to be a meeting with the Georgian
technical staff in September, however, it could not be materialized due to
certain problems.
“It is decided that a multilateral meeting to be held with Armenian and Georgian
technical groups in Armenia in late November in order to study the existing
networks and potentials and exchange views based on (technically) obtainable
capacities,” he maintained.
The idea to expand electricity integration beyond the country’s neighbours
surfaced on the sideline of recent CIS (Commonwealth Independent States)
conference in Georgia, having Vahdati and deputy energy ministers of other two
countries to come up with a good understanding on the matter.
The initiative assumed an impetus and came to forefront when the Georgian
president visited Iran thereafter.
