NYC to require stores to accept rechargeable batteries for recycling

Dec. 5

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed legislation requiring the recycling of rechargeable batteries.

The law requires retailers selling rechargeable batteries in the city to accept them back from consumers even if they didnīt buy them at their store. Retailers also must post a sign at their storeīs entrance notifying customers that they are required to recycle rechargeable batteries and that the store is a collection point.

Rechargeable battery manufacturers must submit a plan to the city that identifies how they will collect the batteries from retailers and recycle them.
