NEW DELHI, Jul 6, 2005 -- Asia In Focus

The non-tariff barriers being promoted by industrialised nations as a way of promoting clean energy will be opposed by India. Instead, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, due to leave for the G-8 summit in Gleneagles in Scotland today (Wednesday), wants a "common and differentiated response" to deal with climate change and sustainable development.

* India will be supported by its fellow G-5 members, namely China, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico.

* Foreign Secretary Shyam Sharan said developing countries should not be penalised for greenhouse gas emissions that have mostly come from industrialised countries.

India, other leading developing nations oppose G-8 push for non-tariff barriers aimed at curbing greenhouse gases
