Russia, Chile to Cooperate in Nuclear Energy Utilization

Russia and Chile signed an agreement on cooperation in the nonmilitary use of nuclear power during a meeting of the Russian-Chilean intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation.

The agreement was signed by head of the Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosenergoatom) Alexander Rumyantsev and by Chilean Mining Industry Minister Alfonso Dulanto.

Commenting on the deal, Rumyantsev told the press that "Chile doesn't have many natural resources, and they are considering the possibility of building a nuclear power plant."

Chile "expressed interest in working on this project" with Russian specialists, Rumyantsev said. "We have agreed upon this now," he said.

In addition, the parties signed a statute on working group for military-technical cooperation.
