UK needs mix of energy sources to meet future needs: King

London (Platts)--14Jul2005
The UK needs a variety of energy sources to cover future energy needs, Sir
David King, chief scientific adviser to the government said Tuesday at the
Energy Institute's annual summer lunch in London. King, who is also head of
the Office of Science and Technology, said that decisions taken now contribute
to addressing future energy challenges.

"I do not think it is right to pick a winner for today or tomorrow's energy
markets, we need a good mix of energy sources, from renewables to coal to oil
and nuclear, both fission and fusion," King said. "Taking on this energy
challenge will require the progression to market of a wide range of new and
developing technologies over the short, medium and longer terms. Indeed, many
of the technologies that can reduce emissions are with us already." King began
his speech by reflecting on the Energy White Paper's four goals; to reduce the
UK's emissions; to keep the reliability of energy supplies; to promote
competitive markets in the UK and abroad and to ensure households are
adequately and affordably heated.
