A scheme that allows car
buyers to check the environmental performance of new cars, in the same way as
with home appliances, has been launched. The fuel efficiency labels show
information such as how many miles to the gallon a car gets, how expensive it is
to run and whether it qualifies for a reduction in road tax due to emissions
output.
"Consumers will now be in a better position to consider the environmental impacts of different cars and to make an informed decision on which one to choose,” said Stephen Ladyman MP, at a car showroom in Guildford that has begun using the scheme.
“Motorists can make a real difference to the environment as well as to
their pockets by choosing the cleanest, most fuel efficient models. I would urge
anyone thinking of buying a new car to watch out for the labels - coming to your
local showroom soon," he added.
The voluntary scheme has been adopted by every major car manufacturer trading in
the UK, and is expected to be in use in all dealerships by September.
