A cheaper, environmentally friendly energy source is hitting the market soon, thanks to efforts on both sides of the border.

Working with the Seattle-based company Hydrogen Power Inc, scientists from UBC and Seattle's Washington State University have found a new way to produce hydrogen power on site and on demand.

The process, discovered at UBC five years ago, produces hydrogen energy without any toxic byproducts by combining aluminum and water, said Ricki Gujral, CEO of Hydrogen Power in Seattle.

The company will soon be going to market with their first prototype called H2 for You, a portable hydrogen generator that cuts out the need for storing hydrogen power.

"All we have to do is ship our aluminum and you add the water wherever you are," said Gujral. "Anywhere you require hydrogen power, you can use our technology."

And since hydrogen power doesn't put out greenhouse gas emissions or burn fossil fuels for energy, "the savings are to the environment," said Gujral.

The company will power a traffic light with hydrogen on Canada Day at the Cloverdale amphitheatre.
