A
new report launched prior to the G8 meetings has outlined how wind energy could
supply as much as 12% of the world’s energy by 2020, and deliver massive
emissions savings in the process. The ‘Windforce 12’ report, by Greenpeace
and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) shows that a developmental push in
various markets around the world, including the UK and USA, would achieve major
growth in the industry capable of enabling the required capacity.
If wind energy provided 12% of the world’s power, with 1250GW of generation, some 10,771 million tonnes of carbon dioxide would be saved, says the report.
"Wind energy has a huge role to play in our energy future and in combating climate change. It is already one of the fastest growing energy sectors in the world. G8 nations must encourage and support wind power developments worldwide to ensure that we can curb greenhouse gas emissions," said Sven Teske, of Greenpeace International.
"Wind power is one of the few energy supply technologies that is ready
for a broader roll out today; wind has the maturity, clout and global muscle to
deliver deep cuts in CO2, while providing a hedge against fluctuating fossil
fuel prices and reduce energy import dependence," added Corin Millais, of
the GWEC.
