Coal production rises just 5,000 tons for week

The US Energy Information Administration said that 21.1-mil tons of coal was
produced in the US the week ended June 4. That is up just 5,000 tons, or
0.02%, from 21-mil tons the previous week. Year-to-date production was up 0.2%
at 470.9-mil tons from 470.1-mil tons at the same time in 2004.

Anthracite production remained flat at 38,000 tons, bringing year-to-date
production to 742,000 tons, up 11% from 669,000 tons in the same period last
year. Bituminous and lignite production rose 5,000 tons, or 0.02%, to 21.013
million tons from 21.008-mil tons the week before, and is up 0.02% for the
year to 470.2-mil tons, compared with 469.5-mil tons in 2004.

The Appalachian region produced 7.4-mil tons, the interior produced 2.7-mil
tons and the West produced 11-mil tons, EIA said. Production in Appalachia and
the interior fell from the previous week--Appalachian output dropped 129,000
tons, or 1.7%, while the interior fell 96,000 tons, or 3.4%. West production
increased 229,000 tons, or 2.1%. Year-to-date production of 163.6-mil tons in
the Appalachian region was down 2.7% from 168.2-mil for the same period in
2004. But the interior increased 1.4% and the West increased 1.9%, compared
with the same time last year. Interior production stands at 63.4 million tons,
compared with 62.5-mil tons last year, while the West has produced 244-mil
tons, compared with 239.5-mil tons at the same time in 2004.
