David K. Garman Sworn in as Under Secretary of Energy

David K. Garman was sworn in today as Under Secretary of Energy for Energy, Science and Environment at a small ceremony held at the Department of Energy (DOE) headquarters in Washington, D.C. Mr. Garman was sworn in by Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman after being unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on Wednesday, June 15, 2005.

"As Under Secretary, David will continue his proven leadership at the department as we work to provide new energy choices for America's future and maintain an affordable and reliable energy supply," Secretary Bodman said. "David will continue to promote energy efficiency and lend his outstanding management abilities to the department."

"It is an honor to continue serving President Bush as Under Secretary of Energy," Under Secretary Garman said. "I cherish the relationships that I have made at the department and look forward to the challenges ahead."

As Under Secretary, Mr. Garman will be responsible for the energy, science and environment (ESE) programs at the Department of Energy. ESE embodies nearly $14 billion of work DOE undertakes each year in energy research and development, demonstration and deployment; environmental cleanup; legacy management; radioactive waste management and other activities.

Mr. Garman has served as Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy since 2001, and has served as Acting Under Secretary for the department. His portfolio will continue to emphasize the need for clean, affordable energy for the American people.
