Renewables could reach 30% in 2020 if demand reduced: MEP

Brusels (Platts)--17Jun2005

Renewables' share of total European Union energy demand could reach 30% by
2020 if that demand is reduced, Luxembourg green Claude Turmes told the
European Parliament's energy committee Thursday.

He cited a European Forum for Renewable Energy Sources study suggesting there
was potential for 25% even without taking energy efficiency and energy savings
initiatives into account. The EC is to look in 2007 at the feasibility of
setting longer term renewables targets. "Our studies suggest 20% would be
realistic, but we're still studying all the implications," the EC's head of
renewables, Alfonso Gonzalez Finat, told the committee. Turmes is rapporteur
for the EP report on last year's EC study which showed that most EU member
states were likely to miss the indicative 2010 targets of 12% of total energy
and 21% of power from renewables. He argued that long term targets were the
best way to give investors confidence. "We need big players in renewables,
especially when we go offshore. Having 2020 targets will help," he said.
