UK Government: Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett welcomes launch of London Climate Change Agency

Jun 20, 2005 -- M2 PRESSWIRE

Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett today praised the establishment of the London Climate Change Agency, describing it as a key driving force in tackling climate change.

Mrs Beckett welcomed the Mayor of London's commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, saying the seven per cent fall in emissions in the capital between 1990 and 2000 set a good example to other global cities.

She added that the scale and nature of the climate change challenge required combined political and business leadership across London and the G8 nations, whose heads of state are due to discuss climate change at the Gleneagles Summit next month.

"I firmly believe the setting up of the Agency, which is being conducted through a public/private partnership to deliver low and zero-carbon energy projects across London, will do much to help meet the Government's and the Mayor's ambitious carbon dioxide emission requirements.

"Seventy per cent of London's carbon dioxide emissions come from buildings. The Government is already tackling energy use in buildings through the revision of the Building Regulations, the Sustainable Buildings code and through the implementation of the Energy Performance Buildings Directive. But there is scope to do more and I look forward to seeing the results of the Agency's leadership in this very important area.

"The Agency will not only stimulate the markets for renewable energy and energy services but also provide huge economic development opportunities.

"Sustainable energy projects will provide enhanced security of supply, reduce the number of homes suffering from fuel poverty and also reduce toxic pollutant emissions from transport - benefiting the health of the capital's citizens".
