Using Liquid Manure to Travel 130 km/h over the Tracks – Sweden Wants to Expand Renewable Energy into the Transport Sector

Eleven bottles of Biogas should be enough for a range of around 600 kilometers, according to Carl Lilliehook, boss of the operating company Svensk Biogas. In the last week the company has launched the world’s first Biogas propelled commuter train. The train’s top speed of 130 km/h whisks up to 54 passengers between Linköping and the coastal city of Västervik, 150 km south of Stockholm.

For the road network in Sweden, Biogas has been used for some time. The Swedish Environmental Ministry has promoted the use of Biogas to the point where 779 buses and around 4,500 private vehicles are partly or completely propelled with biogas. The Swedish government wants around three percent of the energy used in the transport sector to come from renewable sources. That would represent over twice the EU average.
