China to Build 31 Nuclear Power Plants by 2020

BEIJING, May 31, 2005 -- SinoCast

China has planned to pour CNY 400 billion in building about 31 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plants by 2020.

The nuclear power plants will be mainly set up in six coastal provinces and autonomous regions and one city, including Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Shanghai.

China has 11 nuclear power plants at present, and 9 are operational now. However, according to related plan, the installed capacity of nuclear power plants in China should amount to 40 million kilowatts by 2020, accounting for 4 percent of China's total installed capacity and 6 percent of China's total power generation, said Kang Rixin, general manager of China National Nuclear (Group) Corp. (CNNC).

In order to achieve the above-mentioned goal, China has to newly build 31 1,000 MW nuclear power plants by 2020.

China will build 1,000 MW nuclear power plants by itself, because it is much cheaper than introducing international technologies, while China has to develop its technologies for some time, Kang Rixin added.

It is reported that China has approved the building of 10 1,000MW nuclear power plants, which will commence construction soon.
