EC ready to sue Germany if energy law not passed by Jul 5

Brussels (Platts)--1Jun2005

The European Commission is to decide on Jul 5 what further action to take
against member states which have not yet transposed the second gas and power
directives, the EC's energy spokesman said Wednesday. European Union energy
commissioner Andris Piebalgs told a German policy think tank in Brussels
Tuesday (yesterday) that the EC was closely pursuing the laggards--including
Germany, which he said had a central strategic location. "I am happy to hear
that Germany will most probably adopt its [energy law] before the summer
break-- irrespective of the political events following the [regional]
elections in North Rhine-Westphalia," said Piebalgs. If Germany does not pass
the law before Jul 5 the EC has the right to refer the case to the European
Court of Justice.
