Fuel cells to power mean machines

Hydrogen powered cars will soon be the way to travel around, in the near future.

Now that the fuel hike has been implemented, petrol and diesel are more expensive across the country. So, if you're worried about the hole that fuel bills are burning in your pocket, then perhaps hydrogen is the answer for you.

You do have an option, albeit a little offbeat. Well, how about cars that run on little else but thin air. Hydrogen cars also called hypercars, are not as far fetched as they sound because that's the way things are going to be headed in the future.

Hypercar Inc. is a California based firm which hopes to have its first model ready to roll off the production line this year. BMW's hydrogen cars use a modified internal-combustion engine with nearly zero emissions. The company plans to sell these cars within the next five years.

Now, before you start looking for the nearest dealership to order your own shiny blue or metallic grey beauty, here's a reality check. Though, the cars are eco-friendly, they are terribly expensive and tend to blow up once in a while!

On the flip side, hydrogen stores energy more effectively than batteries, burns twice as efficiently in a fuel cell as gasoline does in an engine, and produces only a single waste product, water. Therefore, the emission is steam and oxygen only. It's also considered almost eight times as efficient as conventional engines.

So, while this baby might do you some serious bodily harm, at least you can say you did it for mother nature!
