Groups launch campaign against oil, gas leasing in ANWR

Washington (Platts)--29Jun2005

A coalition of conservation, religious and other organizations Wednesday
launched Arctic Refuge Action, a campaign to prevent oil and gas leasing in
the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

The nationwide effort is to include public events, advertising and grassroots
organizing, the group said. "Every day, we hear from more and more people from
across the nation who are outraged that some in Congress are trying to drill
in America's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge," said William H. Meadows,
president of The Wilderness Society.

The FY 2006 budget resolution passed by Congress would pave the way for
development in ANWR by requiring the Senate Energy and House Resources
committees achieve $2.4-bil in "savings." The Bush Administration estimates
that an ANWR lease sale would generate that amount in revenues for the federal
government.
