Italy sees record power demand of 54.1GW Tuesday morning

Trieste (Platts)--28Jun2005

Italian power demand set a new record of 54.1 GW on Tuesday at 1130 EST (0930
GMT), the grid operator GRTN said. The new record is 500MW higher than the
previous high of 53.6GW, set Dec 16, 2004 and 600 MW higher than the previous
summer record of 53.5GW set Jul 23, 2004. GRTN said that this continued the
trend of summer demand, beating out the previous peak of winter demand. The
operator said that the main reasons behind the increase are the changes in
lifestyles, particularly an increase in air conditioning systems and
refrigeration equipment. The GRTN said last week that it has increased its
reserve margins for peak summer demand to 12% from last year's 2, allowing it
to meet demand of up to 60GW.
