Jun 17, 2005 - PR Newswire

BALTIMORE, June 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The White House today announced that President George W. Bush is scheduled to deliver an energy policy speech June 22 at Constellation Energy's (NYSE: CEG) Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant in Lusby, MD.

"It's an honor to be hosting President Bush at Calvert Cliffs, particularly at a time when there's growing consensus that nuclear power is one of the safest and most secure ways to meet our country's increasing demand for clean energy," said Mayo A. Shattuck III, president, chairman and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy. "President Bush has rightfully challenged Congress to promptly pass an Energy Bill that establishes the groundwork for the next generation of nuclear facilities, ensures the reliability of our nation's electric system and reinforces the foundation of open and competitive energy markets.

"Nuclear technology is steadily advancing, as many large U.S. firms have continued to design and build plants overseas," Shattuck said. "That technology needs to be brought to a new generation of American plants."

The president's speech will be held on the grounds of the plant, which is secured and not open to the general public.

Michael J. Wallace, president of Constellation Energy's Generation Group, said Calvert Cliffs has become a model for the industry. The plant was the first in the nation to receive the Department of Homeland Security's Comprehensive Review of Critical Infrastructure designation.

"Calvert Cliffs has long been recognized for excellence in the industry and regulatory communities, and was the first commercial nuclear plant to be re-licensed," said Wallace. "The Calvert Cliffs operating team has done a magnificent job and really set an example for the industry."

Constellation Energy is one the nation's premiere nuclear plant operators, with two units at Calvert Cliffs totaling 1,735 megawatts, one 495 megawatt unit at the R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant near Rochester, New York and two units totaling 1,550 megawatts at Nine Mile Point near Syracuse, New York.

Constellation Energy is one of eight members of the NuStart industry consortium working collaboratively on designs and planning for the next generation of U.S. nuclear technology. The Calvert Cliffs plant is one of six sites under consideration by NuStart for a new nuclear plant licensing.
