Spain makes Russian energy cooperation a 'priority' in Moscow

London (Platts)--8Jun2005

Spain and Russia should make energy cooperation a "priority," Spanish industry
minister Jose Montilla said at the opening of a summit between the two
countries in Moscow Wednesday.

Spain is already Russia's biggest oil and petroleum products customer. But
Montilla said the Iberian country wanted to get involved with Russian energy
transport and distribution, renewables, and other generation projects. Spain
wants to "achieve a satisfactory presence in the Russia market, balancing our
importance as a customer with our presence as a supplier," Montilla said. The
meeting was attended by 20 Spanish companies with plans for the Russian energy
market and Russian energy minister Victor Jristenko. "Our companies have a lot
to offer this market," Montilla said. The Spanish government will do "all it
can" to increase energy cooperation between the two countries, he said. Spain
supports Russia's joining the OECD and WTO "as soon as possible," Montilla
said.
