London (Platts)--22Jun2005

Spanish power demand hit a new summer record of 37,870MW at 1753 CET (1553
GMT) Tuesday, breaking the previous summer record of 37,460MW set at 1324 CET
Monday, grid operator Red Electrica de Espana said. Tuesday also saw the
second consecutive day of record demand for a one hour period, with 37,627MWh
of power used between 1700 CET and 1800 CET. On Monday, hourly consumption hit
set a short-lived record of 37,089MWh between 1300 CET and 1400 CET. Power
consumption would have reached record levels in the early afternoon, had Red
Electrica not cut supplies to some large users on interruptible contracts from
1115 CET to 1415 CET Tuesday because of a lack of generation, a spokeswoman
for the grid operator said Wednesday. By late afternoon, wind power generation
had risen and some thermal power plant generation problems had been solved,
allowing Red Electrica to resume supplies to large consumers, she said.
