Statement from the Minister of Energy regarding security incident at Pickering Nuclear Station

Earlier this afternoon, a suspicious object was found by staff at the Pickering Nuclear Station. Following proper security procedures, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) security staff and Durham Regional Police responded immediately, and staff at the site were assembled and safely accounted for.

The object in question was deemed to be non-hazardous. No one was harmed as a result of this incident.

OPG operates strictly in accordance with federal Nuclear Security Regulations, which are enforced by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The regulations govern all aspects of security at nuclear generating facilities, and provide for the highest standards of safety.

A criminal investigation is now underway by the Durham Regional Police.
