US Homeland Security chief urged to visit LNG terminal site

Washington (Platts)--16Jun2005

US Sens Edward Kennedy and John Kerry have asked Dept of Homeland Security
Secretary Michael Chertoff to visit Fall River, Massachusetts, to "see
personally the danger" posed to the city by Amerada Hess' proposed liquefied
natural gas import terminal.

In a June 15 letter, the senators, both Massachusetts Democrats, said they are
concerned the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission "appears to be on the
verge of approving a project that would be sited in a densely populated urban
area." The senators told Chertoff that "in this post-9/11 environment, it
would be foolhardy to approve the site." They asked Chertoff to visit the city
in the next few days, telling the secretary they are "convinced, once you see
for yourself where the facility would be located, and the narrow waterways
that the massive LNG carriers would have to use to reach it, that you will
agree that this project should not be approved. The consequences of a
terrorist attack on the terminal or on one of the LNG tankers in the inland
water would be catastrophic."
