US to need 11 new LNG terminals by 2025: EIA official

Kuala Lumpur (Platts)--14Jun2005

The US will need 11 new liquefied natural gas import terminals across the
country by 2025 to cope with an expected rise in demand for imports, a senior
official at the US Department of Energy said Tuesday at the 10th Asian Oil and
Gas conference in Kuala Lumpur.

The US currently has five regasification terminals, all on the east, and only
five new projects so far have received federal approval, administrator for the
Energy and Information Administration, Guy Caruso said. There are currently 22
projects that are under review by either the US Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission or the US Coast Guards.

EIA estimated that LNG imports by the US will rise to 6.4 trillion cu ft, or
25% of US demand by 2025, compared to 15% in 2004. "There's a need for more
terminals in different locations to meet the need for imports," he said. Gas
supply from Canada would not be sufficient to meet US demand. But Caruso said
rising imports may not lead to higher gas prices in the US. Instead, LNG
imports will compete with domestic gas supply and reduce prices, he predicted.
