World Bank to lend China 87 mln usd for renewable energy

BEIJING, Jun 17, 2005 -- XFN-ASIA

The World Bank said it has approved a loan of 87 mln usd to China to finance its renewable energy scale-up program.

The loan will be supplemented by a 40.22 mln usd grant from the Global Environment Facility, the World Bank said in a statement.

The renewable energy scale-up program will take place in four provinces - Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Inner Mongolia - and is expected to increase China's renewable energy capacity by more than 20 GW, the World Bank said.

The program will finance a 100 mW windfarm in Fujian province and a 25 mW biomass-fired generation unit in Jiangsu province, according to the statement.

The World Bank anticipates that the project will reduce carbon emissions and suspended particulate emissions by about 800 mln tons each.

Sulfur emissions are expected to be reduced by 30 mln tons, and nitrogen oxides emissions should drop by six mln tons.
