New
'Reverse Fuel Cell' Generates Hydrogen
Orilla,
Ontario - A new ''reverse fuel cell" that creates hydrogen on-the-spot from
water using photovoltaic or wind power is being developed by GreenVolt Power
Corp. Typically, fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity;
GreenVolt's ''RefCell" splits water into its component gases, hydrogen and
oxygen, for use in a variety of industrial and transportation applications. The
unit purportedly uses 20 percent less energy in a significantly smaller unit
size compared to comparable water-alkali electrolyzer devices, and requires only
distilled water to produce 99.5 percent pure hydrogen and oxygen. When used to
power hydrogen fuel cells, the water byproduct created can be reused by the
reverse fuel cell, potentially lowering operating costs. On-site hydrogen gas
generation can also eliminate the problems and expense of transporting hydrogen.
