Senate panel agrees to 8-bil gal/year ethanol in gasoline mandate

Washington (Platts)--25May2005

The US Senate Energy Committee Wednesday agreed to include a provision in
comprehensive energy legislation requiring the use of 8-bil gal of ethanol
annually in gasoline supplies nationwide by 2012.

The ethanol requirement in the bill that stalled in the Senate last year was
for 5-bil gal annually by 2012. Earlier this year, the Senate Environment
Committee approved legislation calling for 6-bil gal annually by 2012. The
energy legislation approved by the House earlier this year calls for 5-bil gal
annually by 2012. The American Petroleum Institute last week released two
reports it commissioned which said that a renewable fuel (ethanol) standard
over 5-bil gal annually would be harmful to the US economy. The Renewable
Fuels Association, which represents ethanol manufacturers, said increasing the
mandate to 8-bil annually would boost the US economy and lessen dependence on
imported oil.
