Wind Farm Delivers "Green Electricity" to Albertans

Wind power in Canada took another big step forward today as the Summerview Wind Farm was officially opened in southern Alberta. The 38 turbine wind farm has joined a growing industry that is making significant progress toward realizing the vision of a sustainable, climate-friendly Canada. The wind farm produces about 209,000 megawatt-hours of "green electricity" - enough to meet the needs of about 29,000 Alberta households.

"This facility reflects the desire of Albertans and all Canadians to protect our environment, address climate change and lead the world in the development and use of renewable energy technologies."

Wind energy is the fastest-growing form of electricity production in Canada, and the Government of Canada plays an important role in making this growth possible. Through its Wind Power Production Incentive (WPPI), which was quadrupled in Budget 2005, the Government encourages the growth of this clean, renewable, reliable energy for Canadians.

Through WPPI, the Government of Canada is investing $24.7 million in the Summerview Wind Farm over the next 10 years. So far, WPPI has supported the construction of 13 wind farms in Canada. By the end of the current year, Canada's wind power capacity will have increased to more than 700 megawatts - more than half of it because of the support provided by the incentive.

Over the next 15 years, the Government of Canada will invest at least $920 million in promoting wind power, increasing its production target to 4,000 megawatts by 2010. That's enough electricity for more than 250,000 Canadian homes - and the wind farms are expected to keep producing for many years.

This will ensure that the actions taken contribute to the long-term goals of building a sustainable economy for the 21st century, a healthier environment and strong communities, while affirming Canada's place in the world.
