Bush wants energy bill on his desk before Congress' August recess

New York (Platts)--31May2005

US President George W. Bush said Tuesday he wants Congress to send an energy
bill to his desk before the House and Senate leave Washington for their summer
break. "Get me a bill before the August recess," Bush said in opening remarks
of a press conference at the White House, televised live. "That's what the
American people expect and it's what I expect."

The House of Representatives already passed an energy bill, and the Senate's
Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved its own version last week and
sent the legislation to the full Senate, which still needs to act. A
House-Senate conference would then need to work out the differences between
the two versions and send the final bill to Bush for his signature. "We've
gone a decade without an energy strategy, and as a result, we've grown more
dependent on foreign sources of energy, and consumers see the consequences of
that at the gas pump on a daily basis," Bush said.
