Environment key concern for Europeans

Wednesday 04 May 2005

The health of the environment is as important to today’s Europeans as the state of the economy and other social factors, according to the results of a new Eurobarometer study. Issues such as climate change, water pollution, air pollution and chemicals are viewed as the most worrying environmental topics for EU citizens.

A massive 88% of respondents in the study felt that governments should incorporate environmental elements into policies for other areas such as employment and economy.

Lack of information on green issues also proved to be a notable result in the study, with around 40% of people feeling that they do not get enough information on GMOs and the health impact of chemicals.

"This survey is proof that European citizens care greatly about their environment, and believe that it is intrinsically linked to their quality of life,” said Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas.

“The results give a clear mandate to the Commission to continue working to deliver a high level of environmental protection,” he added.
