A panel of "leading industry experts" has warned that Europe has a deficit in clean energy and transport innovation.

According to independent research by financial information provider New Energy Finance, "Europe may lead the world when it comes to clean energy regulation, but it suffers from an alarming 'Entrepreneurship Deficit'. Out of 296 startups we identified worldwide, 157 were in the USA and only 75 in Europe. European politicians need to decide whether that is what they want, and decide fast."

The report goes on to talk about the spiralling demand for oil and the need for "hydrogen, fuel cell and bio fuel technologies". Well, up to a point. Fuel consumption of cars in Europe is about half that of cars in the US and virtually the only company that can supply a fuel cell vehicle today is Daimler Chrysler (one London bus route has been using Mercedes fuel cell buses for a year now). Also, one might have expected the panel to point out that fuel cells are, in fact, hydrogen powered ? fuel cells and hydrogen are not two separate technologies.
