First Solar Avoids the Silicon Crunch

Ohio's Toledo Blade newspaper offers an interesting and broad look at Arizona-based First Solar's recent solar module manufacturing expansion at their new facility in Perrysburg Township, Ohio. First Solar's USD$ 74 million plant will produce the company's cadmium telluride-based solar modules. Unlike most other solar PV manufacturing, which is based on the increasingly tight worldwide supply of silicon, First Solar uses a different raw material which the company believes can keep them insulated from the rising cost of solar due to raw material shortages.
