Four NERC regions sign agreement to combine starting Jan 1

Washington (Platts)--17May2005

Four regions of the North American Electric Reliability Council have signed a
memorandum of understanding to combine their operations and become a single
entity, the Large Regional Reliability Council, that would cover the
Mid-Atlantic and Upper Midwest of the US and parts of Canada.

NERC currently is comprised of 10 regional councils, but the MOU outlines a
combined Mid-Atlantic Area Council, Mid-America Interconnected Network, East
Central Area Reliability Coordination Agreement region, and eventually the
Midwest Reliability Organization.

The regional councils plan to seek approval from NERC later this year and
could begin operating as one region on Jan 1, according to the MOU. The groups
are working on developing common reliability standards and intend to finalize
bylaws, a budget and membership requirements later this year.
