The large stationary market, which includes fuel cell power generation systems of more than 10kW, is moving closer towards commercialisation. Over 760 systems with cumulative generation capacity of around 35MW have been operated worldwide according to the new Fuel Cell Today market survey. This free report examines recent changes in this area including region of development, technology types, funding and activities of companies working in this sector.

Dr. Kerry-Ann Adamson, Editor of Fuel Cell Today, noted “The large stationary fuel cell market is becoming more global, with units being shipped, installed and tested around the world. This combined with the increasing awareness by utilities and private adopters of the potential of this sector highlights some very healthy signs for long term development”.

The report also overviews the advancements made by the molten carbonate technology in this market, with more than half of the fuel cell systems installed in 2005 being of this type. Although, it should be noted that other technologies are also being developed and showing some progress with, for example, solid oxide fuel cells attracting the largest number of companies.

Alexandra Baker, lead author of the report commented “We are expecting this market to show a good growth over the next few years as technology developers continue to take an incremental approach to the production of large units by focusing first on the much smaller systems with the view of increasing the power output to tens and then hundreds of kilowatts.”
