A recent study shows more employers are providing insurance
coverage for alternative medicine. About 36 percent of Americans 18
years and older use some form of alternative medicine, according to
the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
A survey released by the Kaiser Family Foundation/Health Research &
Educational Trust shows that the percentage of employers offering
coverage for acupuncture jumped from 33 percent in 2002 to 47 percent
in 2004. The percentage rose for chiropractic benefits as well,
increasing to 87 percent in 2004 versus 79 percent two years earlier.
In many cases, however, finding insurance coverage remains a
challenge.
Dr. Steven Weiniger of Conyers Chiropractic LLC points out that
many treatments and services still are not covered.
"Most insurance companies have some chiropractic benefits," he
said. "They usually only cover acute care. Massage is normally not
covered by insurance."
"There are situations where acupuncture is covered as an
alternative anesthesia for some procedures, said
Aetna Inc. spokesman Walt Cherniak,
who said his company also covers a lot of chiropractic therapies.
In addition, Aetna's Natural Alternatives program gives its members
discounts from participating professionals for chiropractic
manipulation, acupuncture therapy, massage therapy and nutritional
counseling. It also offers programs for vitamins and natural health
products like aromatherapy.
Blue Cross and
Blue Shield of Georgia Inc. provides
chiropractic benefits with many plans, according to Patty Trippe,
senior product consultant. In addition, it offers members a discount
program called HealthyExtensions for alternative therapies such as
acupuncture, massage therapy and chiropractic (for members that don't
have the benefit). The program also includes discounts for things like
nutritional supplements, weight loss centers and fitness clubs.
