Coal a bad investment

The folly of NEVCO Energy's proposed coal-fired power plant near Sigurd is getting even riskier for investors. The Oct. 12 issue of Electric Power Daily includes the California Energy Commission's mid-September draft energy policy which calls for a performance standard for utility procurement to be set no lower than levels achieved by a new combined-cycle natural gas turbine.

The standard is likely to convince coal plant developers that the California market is closed for the foreseeable future, and they will shift to more realistic investment targets. To add to the negative picture of investing in dirty power generation, the Electric Power Daily states that America is entering “the best investing environment ever for renewable power.”

The time is now to look toward clean electricity generation and not saddle Sevier County with the burden of being the home of yet another coal-fired power plant.
