ARCATA -- Joan Ogden, co-director of the Hydrogen Pathway Program at University of California at Davis, will present a free public lecture on the future of hydrogen energy at Humboldt State University next week.

In her research, Ogden, an associate professor of environmental science and policy at UC Davis, focuses on technical and economic assessment of new energy technologies, especially alternative fuels, fuel cells, renewable energy and energy conservation. Her recent work centers on the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier, hydrogen infrastructure strategies, and applications of fuel-cell technology in transportation and stationary power production.

The talk is part of HSU’s new “Energy, the Environment and Society” speaker series.

On Nov. 17, the series will present Michel Gelobter, executive director of Redefining Progress, an organization working to shift economy and public policy toward sustainability. Mark Hankins, managing director of the Kenya-based consulting firm Energy for Sustainable Development Africa, is tentatively scheduled to speak Dec. 1.

The series is sponsored by HSU’s Schatz Energy Research Center, the HSU Sponsored Programs Foundation Small Grants Program, the Environment and Community Graduate Program, the College of Natural Resources and Sciences and the President’s Office. Details of the series and information about other fall 2005 speakers are available at http://www.humboldt.edu/~serc/speaker_series.html .

Ogden’s talk is Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in Founders Hall Room 118.
